Teeth Staining Explained

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

There are 3 types of stains discolorations;

SURFACE STAINS

surface stains occur primarily between teeth and on the surfaces of crooked teeth.
These stains are caused by strong discoloring agents such as tea, coffee, curries and tobacco.
These can be managed by good oral hygiene and with regular visits to your dentist for professional cleaning.

SOFT DEPOSITS

These are caused by plaque a sticky film of bacteria that builds up on teeth over time into a cement like substance called tartar if the plaque is not removed.
They typically dissapear after a thoroughdental scaling and polishing.

STAINS PART OF THE TOOTH STRUCTURE

These discolorations include white splotches on enamel surface and bands of brownish-gray across the teeth.
They can be caused by faulty hardening of tooth beofre birth or interuption of normal enamel formation by medication or disease.
Tetracycline stains which appear unslightly yellow, dark brown or blue gray discolorations often develope in people who were treated with antibiotic tetracycline before the age of 8 or if your mother took it during pregnancy.
These can be treated with extensive professional bleaching at the dentists or applying porceline veneers to teeth.
