My 6 Months Smile Journey

Friday, November 4th, 2011

Hi my name is Victoria and i am the Senior Nurse here at Fresh Dental.

I had Orthodontic work (braces) when i was a child but was not given retainers to wear, so unfortunately my teeth have moved quite alot.

I have wanted to improve the appearance and alignment of my teeth for a while and working at Fresh Dental provided me with the perfect opportunity to do so.

Dr Vasant recommended “6 Months Smile” to me as he felt this suited my treatment need the best and would be quicker treatment to complete.

So i thought i’d share my 6 Months Smile journey with you.

Week 1

After a full check up and x-rays to check my teeth were healthy, i spent approx 40 painless minutes in the chair; and i now have my braces fitted to my upper and lower teeth.
Other then feeling a little strange, i was still able to eat some lunch straight away.

After a couple of days although my teeth were feeling tender due to the movement i was advised to take pain relief for the first couple of days.

I am really happy, friends and family have commentated on how good the braces look cosmetically and how they even hardly noticed i had braces on.

Even though ive only my braces on for just over 1 week, i am thrilled with the progress so far. Not only can i see how my teeth have moved and improved but others can too!!IMG_5299IMG_5277

Crowded, Crooked Or Gappy Teeth A Worry?

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

Has having crowded, Crooked or gappy (spaces) teeth ever been a concern for your appearance?

Does over crowded and overlapping teeth cause difficulty in cleaning between your teeth?

Does gappy and spaced out teeth affect your appearance when you smile or talk?

This isnt a issue anymore as dentistry is always advancing in the field of technology, difficult to treat teeth are always getting easier to correct.

Crowded, Crooked or gappy teeth can be easily corrected with minimal or none at all abrasion to teeth.

Braces would be the ideal solution as braces will force the teeth to move in any position or direction you want them to over time either to close gaps, position crooked teeth or to spread out overlapping teeth.

But most adults wont feel comfortable wearing metal braces maybe because it would affect their job role when speaking or giving presentations to clients or their social life.

There is a solution for people who are concerned about metal braces and since technology has speeded up in the last few years orthodontics also has.

There are many options such as as Invisilign a clear brace system which are incredibly hard to notice and uses the latested technology to move teeth in any direction. Invisilign also provide a virtual video of your teeth displaying the exact movement of teeth at each time stage so you are aware of how the whole procedure is going to work.
These are also removable so wont affect cleaning of your teeth or when eating.

6 Months Smile is another brace system which uses clear braces instead of silver to give your mouth the natural look when smiling or talking in a very short time and the wires are tooth coloured so barely visible at all. Many patients opt in for this treatment if they need thier teeth to look amazing in a short while eg before a wedding as they van be moved within 4-9 months depending on your mouth.
Discomfort is minimal as teeth are gently repositioned .

Inman aligner is not as “invisible” as invisalign but has many of the advantages that the invsialign system has over traditional braces in that it is removable so that is doesn’t disturb your eating and oral hygiene. In additional all movements are achieved with a single aligner so there is no need to change your aligners every week.
It is more effective at correcting problems with front teeth.

There are many many treatments afterwards which you can choose to make your teeth look perfect by using tooth whitening, crowns and veneers.

If you require more information regarding any of the above treatments please dont hesitate to contact us via phone, email or even in person.

Just cosmetic?

Patients often get given the option of having tooth coloured composite fillings instead of silver amalgam fillings.

The composite fillings do hide the fact that you have fillings in your mouth but are there any benefits of having composite fillings instead of amalgam fillings?

Most people will say no to composite fillings due the price as they are a little bit more then normal amalgam fillings but we will let you decide after reading below to see which type you will choose on your next visit.

ADVANTAGES OF COMPOSITE (WHITE) FILLINGS:

Since they bond to the tooth, composite fillings restore most of the original strength of the tooth. Silver weakens the teeth, making them more susceptible to breaking. Since broken teeth are very expensive to restore, composites can save a lot of expense over the long run.
Composite fillings restore the natural appearance of the tooth.
Teeth restored with white fillings are less sensitive to hot and cold than teeth restored with amalgam, if correct techniques are used.
Composites are mercury-free. Mercury in the fillings is viewed by some as being toxic.
Composites require less removal of tooth structure. Especially with new cavities, the size of the hole made for the filling can be dramatically smaller with composites.

ADVANTAGES OF SILVER AMALGAM FILLINGS:

They are generally less expensive. Composite fillings, if they are done correctly, take about 60% longer, require special expertise and expensive materials, and are more difficult to place, and so they cost considerably more than silver.
Composite requires the use of special bonding technology that many dentists are uncomfortable with.
The proper placement of a white filling requires that the site for the filling be kept totally isolated from saliva while it is being placed. In the very back of the mouth, on some patients, it is difficult to keep the tooth isolated for the duration of the procedure. A silver amalgam filling does not require this strict isolation of the tooth.
The filling by itself is a stronger material, although it weakens the tooth.
Silver fillings have a longer history of use than mercury-free fillings, thus some feel that they are more tried and tested.
